Reusable Water Bottles FAQs

Reusable Water Bottles FAQs

How much plastic is saved by using reusable water bottles?

It’s estimated that Americans purchase about 50 billion water bottles per year, most of which are made from disposable plastic. If everyone switched to reusable water bottles, we could potentially save millions of pounds of plastic from ending up in landfills and the oceans each year.

Reusable water bottles are not only better for the environment, but they’re also better for your health. Plastic water bottles can leach chemicals into your drinking water, including bisphenol-A (BPA) and phthalates. BPA and phthalates have been linked to a variety of health problems, including reproductive system damage, hormone disruption, and cancer.

Can you freeze reusable water bottles?

Yes, but it’s not recommended. Freezing reusable water bottles can cause them to crack and leak after thawing out. If you must freeze a reusable water bottle for an extended period of time, be sure to leave some empty space in a bottle. As the freezing process occurs, the ice expands and increases in volume by nine percent. If you don’t leave some space for expansion, the bottle will crack or break.

Best reusable water bottle material

Best Reusable Water Bottle Material

There are plenty of reusable bottle materials out there. However, the healthiest options remain to be glass, copper, silicon, steel, and titanium. They don’t have any BPA or added chemicals, plus they are super sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Glass

Glass is a cheaper and more commonly found material for reusable water bottles. It doesn’t affect the taste of water whatsoever and it can be recycled endlessly. Plus, it’s dishwasher safe and contains no nasty chemicals. The downside is that it can easily break, so it’s not a bottle for avid campers or kids unless it comes with a silicone sleeve or other outer protective layer.

Titanium

Titanium is a unique material that is very strong and durable but low in density, making it light. It doesn’t leave an aftertaste, and titanium is resistant to corrosion, as well. Because it’s so strong, it’s often the more expensive material for reusable water bottles.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is commonly used for reusable bottles. It’s highly durable, and it can hold both icy and hot drinks for long periods of time. The minor downside is that some bottles may give off a more metallic taste, but not all of them. I also like that they are dishwasher safe and they don’t rust, either.

Copper

Copper is not only attractive but many people rave about its various health benefits. While it’s not scientifically proven, we know for a fact that copper is antibacterial. This means it kills germs upon contact, which is important for anything that holds your water or food. It also doesn’t rust, and it’s safe to wash in the dishwasher as well.

Silicone

Silicone is both effective and kid-friendly. It’s also eco-friendly and produces zero waste. Because the material is so soft and pliable, many collapsible bottles are made out of silicone. I like that they are dishwasher safe, and while they do have a type of aftertaste, it’s not very strong.

Can you bring a reusable water bottle on a plane?

Good news! Yes, you can bring a reusable water bottle on an airplane no matter what material it is made of as long as it is completely empty. You may fill up your empty bottle at a refilling station and carry your full water bottle onto the plane once it has passed through security.

Can reusable water bottles be recycled?

It depends on the material. Some water bottles, like those made of aluminum, silicone, steel, or glass can be recycled. Others, like those made of plastic, cannot be recycled and should be thrown away.

You can also always give the bottle a second life by repurposing it into a vase or a pencil holder.

Why do reusable water bottles smell?

It’s not surprising that reusable water bottles smell since they often hold bacteria and mold. However, there are a few ways to prevent this from happening.

One way is to make sure to wash your bottle regularly with hot water and dish soap. You can also soak it in vinegar for a few hours before washing it. Additionally, you can try using a water filter or purifier to get rid of any impurities in the water. And finally, you can buy a bacteria-killing product like hydrogen peroxide and use it to clean your bottle every once in a while.
